Law and finance experts

Expert networks such as Mercor, micro1, Snorkel AI, Surge AI and Handshake AI sell work by domain experts, but none of their pages we read names law or finance as a field or explains bar or CPA checks. Attorney and CPA licenses can be confirmed on public registries, so make that a condition of the contract.

What do legal experts produce for AI training?

Most legal projects fall into four shapes: written answers to legal questions with reasoning shown, redlines and clause rewrites, grading model answers against a rubric, and building the rubric itself. The last is where seniority pays off. A rubric written by an experienced litigator or transactional lawyer decides what every later grader rewards.

Jurisdiction is the detail buyers forget. A bar admission is state by state, and a model graded by lawyers from one state will learn that state's habits.

Law: what to ask for and how to confirm it.

US-licensed attorneyBar admission and good standing on the public attorney search of the state that licensed them. Admission in one state says nothing about another.
JD graduate or law studentDegree or enrollment verification through the school or a clearinghouse. Not a licensed lawyer; say so in the rubric. Lookup: National Student Clearinghouse.
Paralegal or contracts specialistUsually no state license. Ask for years in the role and a graded sample task.

And finance experts?

Finance work splits between tasks that need a license and tasks that need experience. Accounting treatment, tax positions and audit-style review lean on CPAs. Valuation models, credit memos, earnings summaries and deal analysis lean on analysts and former bankers, whose skills no registry can confirm; a graded sample task is the test.

Finance: licenses with public lookups.

Investment adviser representativeRegistration on the SEC adviser disclosure site. Lookup: SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure.
Analyst or banker, no licenseEmployment history and a graded modeling or memo task. Ask whether the vendor checks references.

What do these vendors publish about pay?

Two of the seven publish anything. Labelbox's expert network, Alignerr, states pay of up to $150 an hour. Handshake AI says fellow pay varies by project and that the hourly rate is shown before a fellow joins. The others publish no rates on the pages we read, and none publishes what a buyer pays.

Expert pay is a floor for your budget, not a price: the vendor adds recruiting, management, review and margin.

Which contract points matter most for professional experts?

  • Credential warranty. The vendor warrants that each expert holds the credential you specified, and re-checks it during the project.
  • Conflicts. Practicing lawyers and accountants may have conflicts with your company or your customers; ask how the vendor screens for them.
  • Ownership chain. Expert to vendor, vendor to you, in writing.
  • No advice. The work is training data, not legal or financial advice to anyone; the agreement should say so.

Questions buyers ask

Does an expert need to be licensed in my state?

For grading answers about one state’s law, yes, ideally: admission in New York says little about California procedure. For general contract drafting or reasoning, a licensed attorney from any state may be enough. Write the requirement into the brief.

Can a paralegal or law student do the work instead?

For first-pass drafting and simpler classification, often yes, at lower cost. For final grading or rubric design, most buyers want a licensed attorney. Label the credential honestly in your data so the model card can say who wrote it.

Is a CPA needed for finance data?

Only where the task depends on accounting judgment or tax rules. Financial modeling, filings summaries and investment memos are usually done by analysts and former bankers, who hold no license that a registry can confirm.

Do experts sign confidentiality terms?

Ask the vendor. Experts usually sign terms with the vendor, not with you, so check that those terms cover your prompts and rubrics and that the vendor’s agreement with you passes ownership of the output on to you.

About two minutes, in three parts: company ZIP code, your work email, then some taps describing the task. A person reads every brief.

Describe the project in words only. No datasets, prompts, samples or files, here or by email.

Plain terms: we run an introduction service, and a vendor we introduce could pay us for it.
